Lloyds Bank — United Kingdom
Brief history and founding
Lloyds Bank traces its roots to 1765 when John Taylor and Sampson Lloyd opened a private banking business in Birmingham. Over more than two centuries the institution evolved through expansion, mergers and reorganisation to become one of the United Kingdom's leading retail and commercial banks. In the 20th century Lloyds grew via acquisitions and branch expansion. The late 20th and early 21st centuries saw the group reorganise several times: Lloyds Bank merged with TSB to form Lloyds TSB in 1995, and later became part of Lloyds Banking Group following the 2009 acquisition of HBOS. Today Lloyds Bank plc operates as the primary retail and commercial banking arm within Lloyds Banking Group.
Type of bank
Lloyds Bank is primarily a retail and commercial bank. Its core operations focus on personal banking (current and savings accounts, mortgages, cards and personal lending) and business banking (SME banking, commercial lending and asset finance). It also provides services to larger corporate and institutional clients through specialized divisions, offers wealth management and insurance products, and maintains treasury and capital markets capabilities to support corporate customers. However, Lloyds is not a global investment bank in the same mold as large international universal banks; its activities are principally UK-focused.
