Swedbank — Zweden: Overzicht

Brief history and founding

The origins of Swedbank trace back to the Swedish savings bank movement that began in the 1800s. The modern Swedbank emerged through consolidation during the 1990s: savings banks and föreningsbanken (association bank) operations were merged and reorganized to create a national banking group. In 1997 the prominent banking entities were combined under the name FöreningsSparbanken (often abbreviated FSB). In 2006 the group rebranded as Swedbank AB (publ) to reflect its national and international operations.

Over subsequent decades Swedbank grew through organic development and acquisitions, broadened its range of services beyond classic savings and lending, and built out digital services such as internet and mobile banking. The bank has also expanded into the Baltic region (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), where it has historically been a major retail and corporate bank.

Type of bank

Swedbank is a universal bank that provides a mix of retail banking, corporate and commercial banking, asset management and financial market services. Its core activities include:

  • Mortgage lending: large market share in Sweden through mortgage subsidiaries
