Eligibility Criteria for the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa
The Spanish Digital Nomad Visa is specifically designed for non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens who can perform their work remotely. The core eligibility requirements are stringent but clear, ensuring that only genuine digital nomads benefit from the scheme.
Nationality and Residency
Applicants must be citizens of a country outside the European Union, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland. Furthermore, they must not have been residents in Spain during the five years immediately preceding the visa application.
Remote Work Status
This is the cornerstone of the DNV. Applicants must demonstrate that they can perform their work remotely. This can be achieved in two primary ways:
- Employed Individuals: If you are an employee, you must work for a company or companies located outside of Spain. Crucially, your Spanish income from these companies must not exceed 20% of your total professional activity. This clause is designed to prevent individuals from essentially working for Spanish companies while on a DNV.
- Self-Employed Individuals/Freelancers: If you are self-employed or a freelancer, you must work for companies or clients located outside of Spain. Similar to employed individuals, any income derived from Spanish clients or companies must not exceed 20% of your total professional income.
In both cases, you must prove a genuine and continuous working relationship with your employer(s) or clients for at least three months prior to the application. For employed individuals, proof of employment for at least one year with the current company is generally required.
Professional Qualifications and Experience
Applicants need to demonstrate relevant professional qualifications or experience. This typically means holding a university degree, vocational training qualification, or possessing at least three years of professional experience in their field.
Financial Solvency
One of the most critical aspects of the DNV application is proving sufficient financial means to support oneself and any accompanying family members in Spain. The current requirement is 200% of Spain's minimum interprofessional wage (SMI) for the main applicant. For 2024, with the SMI at 1,134 euros per month, this translates to app
